     Rape attempt foiled in Kolkata Municipal

According to police, a 20-year-old from Topsia area had gone scouting for a house in Mullickbazar after arguing with her family that she wanted to live on her own. "Around 9pm, on AJC Bose Road, she realized two persons were following her. They promised to show her a room that suits her budget and took her to the first floor office of KMC ward 63 on 9/1 AJC Bose Road," said an investigating officer. A third person joined them there. They confined her to the room and tried to get her to drink liquor, says the FIR. Then, they tried to force themselves on her, the woman says.

The woman resisted and screamed for help. Luckily, some locals heard her and rushed into the KMC office. They cornered the trio and called the police helpline - 100 - at 1.15am. Shakespeare Sarani OC Arun Kumar De personally led the team that responded to the distress call. A police team escorted the survivor home and a lady officer was sent on Monday to take her statement. The arrested trio were produced in court, said DC-south Murlidhar Sharma. "We have contacted KMC to know if the accused guard was on their payroll. We will also find out how his friends got access to the building at night. Medical tests show all three were drunk," said an investigator.

 

Mayor Sovan Chatterjee said the guard was on contract and the firm he works for has been showcaused. "We will take action," he promised, adding vigil will be stepped up at all KMC offices. "We will run a review and see if offices need to be left open after dark. We will seek details of all guards and whether any of them has a police record," the mayor said.

Police will take the three suspects to the KMC office to reconstruct the crime. Ward 63 councillor Sushmita Bhattacharya denied it was her office. "It is was neither a Trinamool office nor my main office. There is just one room allotted to me that was under lock and key. The room probably houses the health unit of the ward," said Bhattacharya.

Memories of the Park Street gang rape rushed back for a few nervous moments for Kolkata Police on Sunday night when a young woman complained she had been kidnapped by three men from AJC Bose Road and taken to a KMC ward office where they tried to rape her.

Unlike the Park Street rape case, Shakespeare Sarani police took quick action and arrested three suspects, one of whom is a KMC security guard of the ward 63 office, Md Taufiq. Police have registered a case of kidnapping and criminal conspiracy and sent a lady officer to the survivor's home to record an FIR and statement. Police say Taufiq, 37, is the main conspirator and the others - Shah Alam, 30, and Md Sainul, 45 - are his friends.
