Stepping up the offensive against Hyderabad University over dalit scholar Rohith Vemula suicide Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday sat on a day long hunger strike alongside agitating students from the institution .
I am here today at the request of Rohith friends and family to stand with them in their fight for justice Rahul Gandhi said .

Rohith was found hanging inside a hostel room in the university on January 17 .



                                       
 

A young life full of dreams and aspirations was cut short . We owe it to him to the memory of Gandhiji to every single Indian student who dreams of an India free from prejudice and injustice Rahul said .
Rahul who arrived here at 12.10 am also participated in a candle light march by 2000 students to mark Rohith birth anniversary .

As students raised slogans against HRD minister Smrithi Irani and Union labour minister Bandarau Dattatre Rahul requested they not shout murdabad which means death to .

Let us not say murdabad to somebody . That will not do justice he said .

Three of the students including two research scholars who were earlier suspended, sat on a fast until death demanding that vice chancellor Appa Rao Podile be fired and arrested and Smrithi Irani and Bandaru Dattaretreya be dropped from the cabinet .

This is Rahul second visit to Hyderabad since the Dalit scholar suicide .  The Congress vice president had visited the university on January 19 and met agitating students and Rohith's family members.
In the meanwhile, in a dramatic turn of events, Dr Vipin Srivastava who took charge as the interim vice-chancellor of Hyderabad Central University went on leave as of Friday afternoon.
Podile, the vice chancellor, is already on leave.
